About Hainault Forest Country Park

Hainault Forest Country Park is located primarily in the London Borough of Redbridge and extends into the Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Covering over 400 hectares (approximately 1,000 acres), the park retains remnants of a former royal forest with ancient trees, wildflower meadows, and several lakes. Originally part of the ancient Hainault Forest referenced since medieval times, large-scale deforestation in the 19th and 20th centuries reduced much of the original forest, but concerted conservation efforts since have helped preserve these vital green spaces. The park offers a mix of broadleaf woodland dominated by oak, hornbeam, and birch alongside open grass areas that support diverse wildlife including deer, birds, and invertebrates. Visitors can explore numerous informal trails and paths that meander through areas like the Warren and the large Hainault Forest Nature Conservation Area. The park's lakes, such as Lambs' Pond, support waterfowl and provide tranquil picnic settings. Historical remnants include medieval banks and ditches which hark back to the site's origin as a royal hunting forest. Recreational activities include walking, birdwatching, cycling (on designated paths), fishing at select locations, and orienteering. The visitor center provides educational exhibits and community events, making Hainault Forest Country Park an accessible natural retreat within an urban environment.
